Bluegrass music originated in the southern United States, and because of that many folks from the US find that it's a strong part of our identity. However, the music has also found it's way all over the world, and mixed and collaborated with other cultures and traditional music styles. To me, this embodies the true spirit of the music, and music in general. Today I'm going to highlight some bluegrass bands from around the world, who have either studied the music and fully embraced it, or have mixed it with other types of music and formed something totally new. Some of these bands are currently playing together, while others don't exist any more, but they all had a unique impact on bluegrass music as a genre.

Many people claim the violin is the most difficult instrument to play. Why? Possibly becasue of the lack of frets, the technique necessary to hold the bow, and the vast possibilities of styles that can be played on the violin. That being said, there are many other instruments that pose similar challenges, and there are also instruments that are difficult in other ways. Let's look at some reasons why the violin is not actually the most difficult instrument.
The United States has a rich history of traditional music, originating from the colonists who settled in the Appalachian mountains and mixed their musical traditions from their home countries. The two most popular styles of traditional music in the US include Old Time and Bluegrass. In fact, many people group the two styles together for their historical connection and similarity in instrumentation and sound. Although there are many similarities between the genres, there are also several distinctions, which is what we will be diving into today.
There are many different ways to pick up new repertiore, including reading sheet music, reading tablature, and learning by ear. Many musicians have one primary way of picking up new music, while others can do all three. Learning music by ear can be an intimidating skill for many musicians, especially those who have spent their entire muscial career reading music. Today, I will discuss a process you can use to learn your favorite music by ear.
